Entry from: Rotorua, New Zealand Entry Title: "This place is stinking" Entry: "En route to Rotorua we broke up the journey by stopping at Karangahake Scenic Reserve for a walk through up a bush-clad gorge to a disused Gold mine. We stopped again at the world famous Paeroa, apparently famous for its Lemon and Paeroa soft drink. We've never heard of it so it was well worth the time taken to get off the bus, get soaked in the rain and take a really impressive photo of a containerised liquid in an oversized bottle we knew nothing about. We got lunch at a town called Matamata, which is the location for the new Hobbiton film. Got lunch but didn't have the time to tour the Hobbit village. Shame. Rotorua, known to some as Sulphur City or Rotten-rua, is home to a sunken volcano, which is now a steaming lake. The volcano blew its top and sunk into a crater years ago but we could see the giant boulders it belched out last time it erupted as we approached, still miles out of town. As you get nearer the town the sulphuric smell, oozing through the ground of this rich geothermal activity area, really hits you. When Skinner lived in Invergordon, the nearby Whiskey distillery gave a rich odour the town had to contend with 24/7 but this was something else.
